Chpt 2 of The Tao Te Ching
5 quotes from the Little Prince
I did not understand why it was so important that sheep should eat little bushes. But the little prince added: "Then it follows that they also eat baobabs?" - I feel that the sheep is a sign of the prince's devotion to the rose. The sheep are scapegoats for the prince's ability to fend off the baobabs bushes and to protect the one thing he loves.
He did not know how the world is simplified for kings. To them, all men are subjects. - This is a sign of the role men play in a world that the prince lives in. I feel that as a prince he feels that he is a man of higher value and status. For things he does, he takes no regard of the effects. By visiting the king, he observes the lifestyles of ones nature of royalty.
"We do not record flowers," said the geographer. "Why is that? The flower is the most beautiful thing on my planet!" - The flower is everything to the prince. He holds it with high demand and loyalty. The flower is his main obsession.
And he was overcome with sadness. His flower had told him that she was the only one of her kind in all the universe. And here were five thousand of them, all alike, in one single garden! - In hope of being reunited with the only one he loves, he is baffled by the fact that he has stumbled upon more than dozens of her kind. He felt betrayed and deceived, for he was convinced that this image of his love was one of unique and symbolic quality.
"But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart..." - I interpreted this quote that our own eyes can deceive us by projecting images that we see. Do not look, but feel. Feel with your heart and your gut. This way we can go with what we have experience not what we satisfies our eyes.
